In true entrepreneurial spirit, Dennis
Slack opened the first Slacks Hoagie Shack on November 6 in1988.
Using start up capital from his own savings and a loan from a bank,
he opened his first store in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia.
The stores success was immediate as people flocked to Slacks
to buy the best hoagie in Philadelphia, reflected in the purchase of
10,000 sandwiches in the first 2 months of business.
Maria Gallagher from the Philadelphia Daily News was the first media
type to discover Slacks Hoagie Shack and sing the praises of the
quality food and service. Shortly after her article, the "Mystery
Muncher" from the Philadelphia Inquirer joined the throng of Slacks
devotees after sampling the best hoagie.
Slacks was voted "Best of Philly" which launched the
restaurant from a neighborhood hot spot to the status of a city-wide
and regional phenomenon.
In 1990 Slacks Hoagie Shack opened their 2nd store in the Holmesburg
section of Philadelphia. Their legions of supporters grew multifold.
To keep up with demand, Dennis Slack decided to enter the franchise
business. In 1991 Slacks opened its 1st franchise location.
Slacks currently has 16 locations via controlled growth, which
ensured consistent quality and service. New locations are about to open
in Newtown and Exton PA.
Throughout their history, Slacks has won "Best of Lansdale"
for cheese steaks and hoagies, including years 2000,2001,2002,2003,2004;"Best
of Bucks" 1998,2000,2002,2004;"Best of Montgomery" 1999,2000,2002:"Best
of Philly"1991,1993,1995;"Best of South Jersey"1998,2002,2004.
There are very few people in the Philadelphia and South Jersey area
that have not heard of Slacks, as a result of Dennis shrewd positioning
of creative advertising throughout the media and sports venues. More
importantly, their fame spread due to the quality food and strong customer
service.
After controlled growth and demonstrated success, Slacks Hoagie
Shack is now prepared to expand nationally into Florida, California
and New York.
